McCahon first used the phrase 'Sacred to the memory of death' in the painting of the same title, dated 1955. (See Sacred to the memory of Death.) In the catalogue of the 1972 ACAG Survey exhibition, McCahon notes: 'The words come from an inscription on a [J. M.] Turner drawing in the Auckland City Art Gallery.'
