In the catalogue to the 1972 Survey exhibition, McCahon explained the origin of the title of this work: 'The words come from an inscription on a Turner drawing in the Auckland City Art Gallery.' The drawing is Church and Churchyard (Sacred to the Memory of Death) in the Mackelvie Trust Collection.
