A great deal has been said and written about many aspects of Colin McCahon’s art, but an area which remains largely unexplored is the artist’s experimentation with non-traditional materials and methods. Beneath the Surface, an exhibition resulting from four years of research into this subject by Auckland Art Gallery’s Principal Conservator, Sarah Hillary, helps to redress the balance, presenting the first in-depth analysis of three paintings from 1954-66, a key period of technical investigation and invention in McCahon’s work.

Curated by Sarah Hillary.
