There is some doubt as to the date of this work. McCahon is known to have dated works retrospectively with some inaccuracy, but he also reprised earlier styles. Stylistically, it is similar to works of the mid-1950s such Singing woman on a pink ground and Madonna and Child. It may have been begun at that time, but not completed or dated until 1958.
