This painting refers to the composition of an unfinished marble frieze by Michelangelo, Battle of the Centaurs, c. 1492 (Florence, Casa Buonarotti). McCahon first became familiar with the work of Michelangelo through publications of the Phaidon Press in the late 1930s and early 1940s. (See also the related works.)
